When I was in middle school, I couldn’t wait until summer vacation.  Every kid loves to be free of classrooms and teachers for those three whole months of summer.  But for kids who get teased and have no friends (like me) it also means three whole months free of social humiliation.  I used to have an ongoing fantasy about coming back from summer vacation totally transformed.  Somehow, some way I would lose weight and come back to school looking drop dead gorgeous and instantly become the most popular girl in school!  Well, one summer I decided to do just that.  I decided I was going to start exercising and stop eating so much junk food.  I would do this everyday and by the time school started, I would be skinny.

My plan did work and I did lose weight!  Except, I didn’t actually start until two weeks before summer vacation was over.  And I didn’t exactly completely transform into the most popular girl in school.  However, I did manage to lose about ten pounds and people did notice!  Those first two weeks led to an entire year of me working out and changing my diet until I eventually lost 100 pounds and..well, you know the story (unless you haven’t read my book yet in which case go read it!). Now, imagine if I had started the very day school let out for the summer?  If I lost ten pounds in two weeks, how much could I have lost if I had given it my all for three months?  I definitely would have lost more than ten!

If you want to start the next school year with a whole new perspective (and possibly a whole new wardrobe) then summer is the perfect time to start!  You have three months to workout and eat healthy until school starts again.  This is your time to work on your health goals.  Whether you want to lose weight, tone up, or just get healthier, three months is the perfect amount of time to make progress.  Try some of these tips to help get you started!

1.  Countdown Calendar:  Buy or make a calendar and mark the first day you start your summer makeover and your first day back at school.  This is your work period where you are going to do your best to make positive healthy changes to your body.  When you can physically see how long you have to complete a goal, it can keep you motivated to stay on track.  Check off each day as you go to see how far away you are from the finish line.

2. Make everyday count!:  You should be checking each day off your calendar with satisfaction.  Everyday is a chance to do something that will take you closer to your goal whether it’s going for a bike ride or choosing the fruit salad instead of the macaroni salad at the barbeque.  Make a mini health goal everyday (like drinking only water on Tuesday then jogging 2 miles on Wednesday etc.) or weekly goals (drinking only water everyday for one week, then jogging 2 miles everyday the next week…etc,).  All those daily and weekly goals will eventually lead you to the first day of school where they all will have paid off 🙂

3. Get outside everyday:  The weather is beautiful during the summer.  There is no excuse to stay inside watching TV.  Make one of your goals to get outside everyday until school starts.  Go for a walk, ride your bike, go for a swim or just hangout at the park.  The more you are outside, the less likely you are to be indulging in unhealthy habits like munching on goodies while you’re watching TV in your house.

4.  Become a master chef:  Find some yummy healthy recipes and experiment a little in the kitchen.  With no school, you’ll have plenty of time on your hands to create healthy and delicious meals.  You have no excuse to go for fast food in order to save time!  When school does start again, you’ll have a whole new list of healthy dishes to make for lunch and dinner to continue your fitness journey.

I hope some of these tips help motivate you to make this your healthiest summer!  Just remember that how fast you see results depends on how hard you work, how consistent you are, and what your body type is.  Some people lose weight really fast while others may lose it more gradually.  Don’t be discouraged if you don’t lose ten pounds in two weeks like I did.  I’ve discovered that while my body type allows me to lose weight really quickly, I also gain weight really quickly.  Maybe you lose weight slowly but also gain weight slowly.  Everybody is different and you shouldn’t compare your results to others.  As long as you are working hard and trying your best, you’ll see some changes.  Stay motivated and have a fantastic summer!

I realize that Thanksgiving Eve is probably not the best time to remind everyone I have a weight loss book coming out soon.  I mean, Thanksgiving should be the one day we can all eat an entire pumpkin pie by ourselves (ahem, not that I’ve ever done that before…) completely guilt free.  However, I am not here to make anyone feel bad about their holiday indulgences.  I’m just excited that after about three years in the making, my book will finally be available for everyone to read!  I’m also happy about the day it comes out, December 24th (Christmas Eve!).  The holidays  are an exciting time full of friends, family, presents, good food and some much needed relaxation time.  But for me the holidays have always symbolized new beginnings.  There is something very motivating about the last few months of the year.  It’s a time to celebrate the year past either because it was an exceptional year , or because it’s  time to prepare for a fresh start.  A whole lot can happen in one year, whether it’s for the better or worse.  Take a minute to reflect on this past year.  I bet a lot has changed, but is there anything that didn’t change you had hoped would?  If not, why didn’t it?

Besides December being the last month of the year, the month of Christmas, and the month my book comes out (yay!) it is also the month of my birthday.  I will be 23 in a couple of weeks and with that day (Dec. 8th!) looming so closely before me, I must say this; time passes by very quickly and the older you get, the faster it will go by.  That is why this year my new years resolution will be to not waste any time.  There is a lot I want to do in life and I want to make sure I get to do as much of it as I can before my time is up!  What is it that you want to get done this new year?  Remember, there are only 365 days and a lot can happen in one year.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Whitney 🙂
